With the much anticipated Group C action underway, we learned very little after one game and hope for more exciting soccer in second match of the day. France played largely uninspiring football and Romania battled well to manage a draw with favored Les Bleus. Stars such as Benzema and Ribery were not involved enough, and Thierry Henry sat out after failing a fitness test as he is recovering from a bad back. Anelka missed a good chance in the first half, but ultimately the good scoring chances I was looking for were absent. You had the feeling the entire game that someone would have to take advantage of a half-chance to earn the win in this game.
What we learned:
Romania is not to be taken for lightly, they are a better side than they get credit for. They show the grit necessary to stick with superior teams, and players like Mutu can have their dangerous moments that can tip the balance of the game. They may be considered the underdog in every game in this group, but don't be surprised if they upset either Italy or Holland.
France is continuing on is questionable form as of late. While they have not been losing, they have not exhibited the fluid style of play you would like to see with a European power. They must find a way to get Ribery more space as the continue on in this competition. They also can use Henry, I just don't think Anelka is good enough as a starting striker.
Up next is Italy vs Holland, let's hope for a better game here! I'll check back with my thoughts later
