SoccerbyIves reports that the New York Red Bulls have agreed to a transfer deal with Villareal of La Liga that will send Jozy Altidore packing for a US record transfer fee of $8 million. The deal includes performance bonuses that could increase the deal to $10 million total. Red Bull fans like myself will surely have a mixed reaction to this news, but you have to be happy for the kid. The deal will not go through until the July 1st transfer window opens, but sources claim Jozy has already agreed to a new contract with Villareal. Details are not available at this time of course. I think the Spanish league is fun to watch and the fluid play that thrives in Spain should be beneficial to the growth of Altidore.
It has been speculated that he may be loaned out to a smaller La Liga club to see more immediate action since he might struggle to crack the lineup immediately at Villareal. What do you think of the news? If you haven't seen him play you will have two more chances. Tomorrow night at Giants Stadium for the Red Bulls (ESPN 2) and Sunday at Giants Stadium for the US National team (ESPN Classic). Best of luck Jozy, and don't tank in your last few matches with my beloved Bulls!
