EURO 2008

Euro's start up Saturday with two matches to get you going. Both matches will be on ESPN Classic. Are you excited for the action?

First up at noon EST is Switzerland vs Czech Republic. Besides being the opener, there will be two reasons I would be interested in this game. For starters I want to see how the Czech team looks, with aging stars it is beginning to be a bit of a transition period for them. Secondly, while Switzerland doesn't always receive the highest level of respect when compared to European powers, they certainly have a player who can change a game in a hurry. Tranquillo Barnetta is a world class forward, but has had ankle problems lately that may hinder his performance.

Next at 2:45 EST Portugal takes on Turkey. Turkey is always a formidable team, but I must say I like Portugal to not only do well in this match, but also to move on deep into the tournament. Turkey boasts Hamit Altintop who plays club soccer for Bayern Munich. Portugal I hardly need to list for you. Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Ricardo Quaresma, Hugo Almeida, and Ricardo Carvalho give Portugal all the attacking talent and defensive balance they need if they perform up to par. Carvalho should lead a defense that is capable of coming up big, while the midfield will wreak havoc on the opposition.

Will you be watching these games? I will record and watch them Saturday night or Sunday as I will be coaching at a youth soccer tournament all day tomorrow. Post your predictions for Saturday's action.
